Global Sumud Flotilla reports drone attack on Gaza-bound ship in Tunisia
How dangerous is the situation in the West Bank? What does survival look like inside Gaza City? The Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) says a drone has struck its main ship in the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said, causing a fire, but that all its passengers and crew were safe. A spokesman for the GSF blamed Israel for the incident, which occurred late on Monday, but the Tunisian National Guard said reports of a drone attack were "completely unfounded". The GSF, however, insisted the incident was a drone attack and said it would provide more details on Tuesday morning.

Drones hit 'Freedom Flotilla' Gaza aid ship in international waters
A ship carrying aid to Gaza in a bid to break Israel's blockade has been hit by drones in international waters off Malta, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the group that organised the mission. The FFC said in a statement on Friday that the vessel, now located 14 nautical miles (25km) from Malta, was the target of two drone strikes while on its way to Gaza. The ship had been seeking to deliver aid to the besieged enclave, where aid groups warn people are struggling to survive following a two-month total blockade by Israel. "Armed drones attacked the front of an unarmed civilian vessel twice, causing a fire and a substantial breach in the hull," the group said. The statement did not directly accuse Israel of carrying out the attack.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,036
Russia's Foreign Ministry accused NATO of trying to turn Moldova into a logistical centre to supply the Ukrainian army and of seeking to bring the Western alliance's military infrastructure closer to Russia. Arto Pahkin, the head of operations of the Finnish electricity grid, told the country's public broadcaster Yle that "the possibility of sabotage cannot be ruled out" after an undersea power cable linking Finland and Estonia broke down. It is the latest in a series of incidents involving telecom cables and energy pipelines in the Baltic Sea. A "terrorist act" sank the Russian cargo ship that went down in international waters in the Mediterranean this week, the Russian state-owned company that owns the vessel said. The Oboronlogistika company said it "thinks a targeted terrorist attack was committed on December 23, 2024, against the Ursa Major", without indicating who may have been behind the act or why. The Azerbaijan Airlines passenger jet that crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people, was earlier diverting from an area of Russia that Moscow has recently defended against Ukrainian drone attacks.

GOP senators push for hearings after Russia downs US drone
Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., reacts to new video showing a Russian jet hitting a U.S. drone and weighs in on the border crisis. EXCLUSIVE: Several Republican senators are calling on Congress to exercise its oversight authority after a Russian fighter jet downed a U.S. drone over international waters earlier this week – an incident that has many worried about more direct conflict between the two superpowers as the Ukraine war enters its second year. "We need a hearing on it. We've asked the Pentagon for hearing, of course, they're probably a little bit busy right now," Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., a member of the Armed Services Committee, told Fox News Digital this week. When asked if he was concerned about Russian officials' announcement that Moscow will try to retrieve the debris, Tuberville said, "Yeah, we should all be."

Gen. Mark Milley 'not sure yet' if Russian fighter jet's collision with US drone was 'intentional'
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said during a briefing on Wednesday that the collision of a Russian jet with a U.S. drone follows a "pattern" of unsafe and risky behavior from Russia. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said during a briefing on Wednesday that America doesn't seek "armed conflict" with Russia after the collision of a Russian jet and a U.S. drone On Tuesday, a Russian Su-27 fighter plane collided with a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone while traveling over the Black Sea, a U.S. defense official told Fox News. The collision occurred in international airspace while over international waters, with the jet in question being one of two Su-27s flying in tandem. The drone's propeller was damaged, forcing it to be ditched in the Black Sea west of Crimea, the defense official said. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin described the incident as a continuation of risky behavior from Russia during Tuesday's press briefing.

GOP senator 'p---ed off' by Russia forcing down US drone: 'We cannot allow that to happen'
Republican Sen. Mike Rounds told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin Tuesday at a Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute summit that he is angered by Russian fighter jet colliding with a U.S. drone over international waters. Republican Sen. Mike Rounds described himself as "p---ed off" following the reported collision of a Russian fighter jet with a U.S. military drone. Iran arms over 50 cities with defense system amid heightened tension with US
Fox News chief Washington correspondent Mike Emanuel reports on an Iranian warship intercepting American drones only to return them the following morning on'Special Report.' Iran has armed 51 cities and towns with a civil defense system aimed to respond to any foreign attack as tensions with the U.S. have mounted in recent weeks. The defenses will enable Iran's arms forces to "identify and monitor threats by using round-the-clock software according to the type of the threat and risk," Deputy Defense Minister General Mehdi Farahi said Saturday, according to a Reuters report. "These days, depending on the strength of countries, the form of battles has become more complicated," he added. Farahi did not name any specific countries Tehran could be targeted by but noted that conventional warfare has largely been replaced by cyber, biological and radioactive attack tactics.

What Is It About Peter Thiel?
Silicon Valley is not a milieu known for glamour and charisma. Still, Peter Thiel has cultivated a mystique. A billionaire several times over, Thiel was the first outside investor in Facebook; he went on to co-found PayPal, the digital-payment service, and Palantir, the data-intelligence company that has worked with the U.S. government. He has co-written a business best-seller, "Zero to One," and launched a hedge fund; he now runs three venture-capital firms. In 2018, citing a regional intolerance of conservative perspectives, he moved from Silicon Valley to Los Angeles; he recently purchased a mansion in Miami Beach.

Is Mass Surveillance the Future of Conservation?
The high seas are probably the most lawless place left on Earth. They're a portal back in time to the way the world looked for most of our history: fierce and open competition for resources and contested territories. Pirating continues to be a way to make a living. It's not a complete free-for-all--most countries require registration of fishing vessels and enforce environmental protocols. Cooperative agreements between countries oversee fisheries in international waters.

Ghost Ships IRL: How Autonomous Cargo Boats Could Disrupt The Massive Shipping Industry
Unmanned marine vehicles will use sensors & AI to crisscross the world's oceans without a crew – potentially lowering costs & improving safety for the $334B shipping sector. Just as driverless cars and trucks are bringing huge changes to the auto industry, and drones are disrupting everything from emergency response to conservation, autonomous ships are becoming the next major transportation innovation. A number of startups and governments are piloting "unmanned marine vehicles" or crewless cargo boats, with the potential to disrupt the $334B shipping industry. Rolls-Royce already demonstrated the world's first remotely operated commercial vessel earlier this year, and the US military is testing an experimental, autonomous warship called the Sea Hunter. Fully autonomous ships aren't yet allowed in international waters.
